Description: Immunoelectrophoretic characterization of antibody subpopulations has been reported that suggest there may be three IgG subclasses for the cat. However, only two types of IgG sequences were isolated from screening a feline splenic cDNA library and appeared to be allotypes of one subclass. The alleles were designated as IgG1a and IgG1b, although functional capability was not examined. Cat IgG secreted as part of the adaptive immune response by plasma B cells, immunoglobulin G constitutes 75% of serum immunoglobulins. Immunoglobulin G binds to viruses, bacteria, as well as fungi and facilitates their destruction or neutralization via agglutination, activation of the complement cascade, and opsonization for phagocytosis.
