Description: Gangliosides, which bear sialic acid residues, exist ubiquitously in the outer leaflet of the vertebrate plasma membrane. GM3 is the most abundant ganglioside, and the primary ganglioside found in adipocytes. Glycosphingolipids, including gangliosides, are oriented at a defined angle to the axis of the ceramide.
