Description: Birds present three classes of immunoglobulins – IgA, IgM and IgY and all of them are incorporated into the egg. IgY, the functional equivalent of mammalian IgG, is transferred in large amounts to the egg yolk via specific receptors at the yolk membrane. The IgY concentration in chicken serum, for example, ranges from 8-10mg/ml and can go up to 10-20mg/ml in the egg-yolk making it effectively the sole immunoglobulin isotype in the egg yolk. It is involved in opsonization, complement system activation, and most effector functions in the birds.
