Description: Immunoglobulin M (IgM) antibodies appear early in the course of infections. IgM antibodies are responsible for agglutination of red blood cells in mis-matched blood transfusions. The level of IgM may vary with the status of disease or infection. IgM antibodies are present as pentamers in the serum and are produced in response to antigens. These are secreted by B cells participate in both neutralization and clearance of pathogens in addition to initiating inflammatory reactions against pathogens through the complement pathway.
